Saturday May 8, 7:15 am to noon – The BART Station Hills (4.5 miles roundtrip, 175’ elevation gain)  Hike is full with waiting list

Fee: None; the walks are free.  Sponsors:  Walks are organized by Save Mount Diablo and co-sponsored by the Community Coalition for a Sustainable Concord and the City of Concord; the first hike is also co-sponsored by Bay Nature magazine, the third hike is co-sponsored by East Bay Housing Organizations.

This is a rare opportunity to take a walk at the Concord Naval Weapons Station.  Since World War II the Weapons Station has been locked away.  As development filled Central Contra Costa County, the Station fences protected thousands of acres and many species of sensitive wildlife.  All hikes are on paved roads.  We’ll see sections of Mt. Diablo creek and hike into the foothills for views of the Weapons Station and of Central County.

The Concord Naval Weapons Station - Inland Area (5,028 acres or about 8 square miles) has been surplused and its future uses are being planned.   Save Mount Diablo and its allies formed the Community Coalition for a Sustainable Concord to weigh in and in January the city indicated its intent to protect 3200 acres as parks and open space.  An Environmental Impact Report has been approved and land use planning will continue for several years.

Walks are limited to 40 people and are full with waiting lists.

All hikes meet at 7:15 am and should be completed by 11:00 and at BART before 12:00 noon.

The following are requirements of the military, no exceptions

You MUST RSVP for each hike, by the Tuesday before each hike, and will be told then if there is space. We MUST have and you will only be confirmed on the list when you have provided

The station is also served by County Connection routes 108, 117, and 127.

We will have a wait list for any responses over 40  If for some reason you have signed up and then can’t make the hike, please let us know as soon as possible.
