Mount Diablo’s two peaks rise above contiguous Shell Ridge Open Space lands as we traverse this loop hike on established trails in the Open Space. The loop includes easy, moderate and slightly strenuous stretches in approximately equal portions. We climb Shell Ridge itself via a gentle switchback, hike the ridge top for about a mile, then descend at Ginder Gap and complete our loop via the shady, tranquil Indian Creek trail. Be sure to bring plenty of water, a snack, and dress in layers. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots recommended; hiking poles may be useful. Heavy rain cancels.
