This is a part time, temporary, 16-20 hours a week, non-exempt internship position that reports to the Stewardship and Outreach Associate. In general, the schedule for this position will be two or three days per week including Saturdays and will take place September 2018 through March 2019.

Under the supervision of the Land Stewardship Associate, the Stewardship and Outreach Intern is responsible for:

  • Aiding the Land Department staff and the Stewardship Committee in stewardship of SMD properties including, building and grounds upkeep, trails repair, restoration, fuel management and other maintenance activities.
  • Administrative support for land programs including the stewardship, hike, outreach and volunteer programs.
  • Assisting with volunteer management, organization, recognition and trainings for current and future volunteers.
  • Supporting events, including the annual Bioblitz and the Mary Bowerman Science and Research Colloquium.
  • Assist with creating content for our website.
  • Organizing photos of SMD properties, restoration projects and land events onto Smugmug.
  • Updating database information for volunteers, vendors and neighbors as needed.
  • Assisting with a variety of Land Department projects as needed, including administrative support.


The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • Working towards a career in the environmental field
  • Ability to be accurate and detailed in accomplishing a variety of administrative tasks
  • Ability to effectively relate to volunteers and the general public
  • Property and equipment maintenance experience helpful but not required
  • Restoration skills helpful or the desire to learn new restoration skills
  • Outgoing personality & sense of humor
  • Appreciation of environmental issues & outdoor recreational activities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with East Bay open space
  • Competency in writing
  • Computer proficient
  • Familiarity with Eventbrite or Smugmug a plus

Essential Requirements

  • Possess valid California driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Daily access to a motor vehicle
  • Ability to work Saturdays and up to two weekdays (not Mondays); final schedule to be agreed to with SMD

Physical Demands
The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is frequently required to stand and must lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Employee must be able to provide frequent physical participation in property workdays, including set up and break down, in varying weather circumstances. Employee must also be able to hike, occasionally in steep and/or rugged terrain and in inclement weather.

This is a paid internship; compensation will reflect experience.
