Who We Are
Save Mount Diablo (SMD) is a nationally accredited land trust and conservation organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Save Mount Diablo has been preserving lands on and around Mount Diablo and educating the public to the mountain’s natural values since 1971. We are biologists, conservationists, hikers, bikers, equestrians, bird watchers, and people who just love to look at the mountain.
SMD is a tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)3 organization (tax ID 94-2681735).
Why Do We Care?
This is our home.
Only half of Mount Diablo has been preserved.
The other half of the mountain, over 60,000 acres, is privately owned and still threatened by development. That means risking the loss of wildlife corridors, ecosystems, and recreational opportunities. Preserving natural land forever means safeguarding our quality of life, including our air, water, and views.
Our mission is to forever preserve the remaining 60,000 acres of natural lands around Mount Diablo through a conservation approach that integrates perpetual land preservation, advocacy, stewardship, land use planning, and education programs. We work to preserve Mount Diablo’s peaks, surrounding foothills, and watersheds through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain’s natural beauty, biological diversity, and historical and agricultural heritage; enhance our area’s quality of life, and provide recreational opportunities consistent with the protection of natural resources.
We envision a permanently protected natural reserve in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, with the peak of Mount Diablo at its heart. We are working to secure large portions of this habitat to be preserved as park lands, and our vision also includes private lands shielded by conservation easements. We endeavor to keep free from development the Mount Diablo core area, and to preserve specific areas that have major wildlife, recreational, scenic, and scientific values.
